Te Aroha Library

What do you think we should do?

Proposed option: Investigate and deliver a suitable building to continue providing library services in Te Aroha?

Any other comments on Te Aroha Library:

It is imperative that a library is retained in Te Aroha in some form. Libraries are an essential community service and also a safe place for people to go and spend time.

Te Aroha Spa

What do you think we should do?

Alternative option: Stop work on it all together?

Any other comments on Te Aroha Spa:

In the current economic climate where people are struggling to provide basics for themselves this is not something that should be a priority. Yes it would be great to move ahead with this at some stage to draw more people in to the town but now is not the time to be spending money on things like this.

Roading

What do you think we should do?

Proposed option: Reduce our roading renewal programme to cut costs?

Walking and cycling improvements

What do you think we should do?

Proposed option: Stop budgeting for new walking and cycling connections and safety improvements?

Town Centre infrastructure

What do you think we should do?

Proposed option: Prioritise maintenance and renewals and Pride of Place?

Additional playgrounds

What do you think we should do?

Proposed option: Limit playground improvements to the planned new playgrounds for Te Aroha and Matamata?

Stage for the Matamata-Piako Civic and Memorial Centre

What do you think we should do?

Proposed option: Remove this project from our work programme?

The services we provide

What do you think we should do?

Alternative option: Cut Council services to get the rates increase lower?

Our Approach to Rates and Debt

What do you think we should do?

Alternative option: Borrow money to help cover the high increase for the year ahead?

Do you have any comments?

Neither option is ideal. The councils proposed increase is criminal. I accept the things that council says they need the money for BUT these things are not things that have just come up. Council will have known for a long time that things like upgrades to wastewater were going to be necessary and therefore these proposed increases should already have been spread over a longer period of time. No way should ratepayers be faced with being in a recession, struggling to provide essentials for themselves and being faced with what amounts to a 35% rates increase over two years (20 and 15.6). It's absolutely criminal.
